The
term "plains game" loosely refers to all the
hoofed animals commonly hunted across the continent. Due
to the huge variety of game that this description covers,
it is impossible to outline all the different hunting
styles and methods used.
No
other hunt offers a bag like
a plainsgame
hunt in Africa; and it is not uncommon to shoot ten trophies
in as many days in a good area.
Many
of the areas where plainsgame flourish are far from
the good big game hunting areas. These two places are
commonly split, with a transfer in
between.
This may also be true for the less common plainsgame
where we may arrange for a nyala, for example, to
be taken to
a different area to the rest of the less common plainsgame.

Some of the plainsgame trophies
from previous hunts.
The
most common method when plainsgame hunting, is to
drive
until the animals are sighted at a distance, and then
an approach is planned, and a hunt begins. In some
areas shooting
from the vehicle is permitted, but these areas are
the exception, not the rule.
Where
the larger game are concerned, tracks are located
and
followed and the animals are hunted on foot most
of the time.
I
have not included shot placement photos in this section,
as the animals are too numerous to cover. However, most
of the African animals have their vital organs a little
lower slung than many other animals around the world,
so its important to keep your shots in
the lower
third of the body.
