CARTER'S AFRICAN EXPEDITIONS |
|
|
What is the difference between an expedition and a safari?
In
Ivan’s words, an expedition is a journey, in search
of something where the emphasis is on getting there –
the areas we mount such expeditions to are always very wild
and remote, with little in the way of infrastructure etc.
There are no game drive roads or fancy camps, we see Africa
in the raw – the people, the wildlife, the scenery
unspoilt by modern man and devoid of tourists.

Carter tries to run at least one expedition each year. These
are safaris that differ in that they are designed to visit
the most remote and inaccessible parts of the continent, the
journey itself is most of the fun and the feeling of being
where few travellers have been before is truly outstanding.
Because of the remote nature of these kind
of trips they are usually operated with minimal backup and
all the food, water and camping gear has to be carried.
As a result, we try and have a vehicle per two clients,
and this has worked out well.
So
far we have done two expeditions, one to the Liuwa plains
of north-western Zambia, where the largest blue wildebeest
migration occurs, not to be confused with the white bearded
wildebeest of East Africa. ...the second was a trip to northern
Mozambique where we were the first real visitors to a park
called Niassa Reserve.
