Buffalo
hunting has the reputation of being some of the most exciting
classic hunting that can be done. I think this stems from
the reputation of a buffalo when wounded, of attacking
hunters and this reputation is well deserved!! Buffalo
have an amazing resistance and keep going after what would
long have finished a lesser animal.
All
the areas that we have hunted buffalo have very healthy
populations and a lot of contact with them can be expected
as we look for the ideal trophy. Depending on the year,
trophy bulls will either be alone or with large breeding
herds.

Ideal shot placement for buffalo
hunting.
Buffalo
hunting is carried out in the traditional way of tracking
the animals using trackers and once they've been spotted
a careful approach is made to within shooting distance
(no further than 80 yards is usual). A good trophy is
selected based on the needs of the hunter, a big boss
and a narrower spread can be ust as impressive as a wider
spread and smaller boss. expect to do some good walking
as we track the buffalo, at times for several hours a
day. They require water everyday and water points are
useful places to pick up tracks.
Buffaloes
are always shot in the heart/lung area... due to their
anatomy, a brainshot or even a neck shot is extremely
difficult and the chance of an attempt like this ending
in a wounded animal is high. The only time a brain shot
is attempted is in a charge scenario where the animal
needs to be dropped in its tracks!!!
I
prefer to use controlled expanding bullets on a buffalo
as they create a larger wound channel and more shock so
the animal is less likely to be wounded. Barnes "X"
points excel in this area and are well proven.
